Sunset Park
Sunset Park is an urban park located in downtown Tucson that replaced an inefficient parking lot. The site is within the original Tucson Presidio of the 18th century, and archaeologists discovered what is believed to be sections of the Presidio wall along the site's western edge. WDG, in collaboration with public artist Melody Peters and landscape architect Marvin Feld, designed the park to enhance the movement of people by uniting the site with the county complex and other downtown buildings and cultural landmarks. The team's design goals included conserving existing historic plants, improving accessibility to City Hall, honoring Tucson volunteers, showcasing native Arizona plants, providing shady places to sit or gather, and increasing parking.
The project relied on volunteers to install the pathways, tile monument, and desert plants.
