Gabe Zimmerman Davidson Canyon Trailhead

The Gabe Zimmerman Davidson Canyon Trailhead Project in Pima County celebrates the life of Gabe Zimmerman who was an avid hiker. Gabe Zimmerman tragically lost his life in the Tucson shooting on January 8, 2011 while serving as community outreach director for Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords. This was a collaborative, pro-bono effort of many team members. WDG developed the concept plan with architect Doug Whitneybell including programming and path/site feature layout.  WDG encouraged the use of the environmentally-friendly stabilized resin pathway material, developed designs for an entry monument, and coordinated the design of the ramada. WDG also worked on revegetation strategies and erosion mitigation.

Improvements included the addition of entry and directional signage in the trailhead parking lot and a trailhead entry gate with public art by Steve Farley. Additional design features consisted of a hitching post, bike racks, a ramada and picnic area, a rest area with bench and bas-relief, interpretive signage of the surrounding mountain ranges, a contemplative sitting area with public art, and a stabilized trail.
